You know the voice. “This shifter throw is kind of long, I bet there’s a part for that.” “Blacked out kidney grilles would be easy and look good.” “This car would sound mean with an exhaust!” “Look at how cheap sway bars are!” “You can totally install a DISA manifold yourself!”
It’s the mod voice. I’ve owned this car maybe two weeks now, and the mod voice has already started. Regardless of the fact that the car is perfectly good already, or the fact that it’s winter, or the fact that I have nowhere to work on a car right now. I was seduced by the siren song of modification when I had my Subaru, and it was Stage 2 only a month after I bought it. But I don’t want the BMW to end up where the Subaru was, a compromised car which begins to annoy you and whose power you can’t even use on public roads.
I’ve already promised myself that I won’t modify the car until the loan is paid off. But I’m going to keep hearing that mod voice, calling to me...

Yup. My new S2000 is calling to me in that voice. Thankfully, the car is both pretty tight and pretty loud in stock form, so unless you go FI or swap or something, there isn’t a crazy amount you can do or rationally defend (as a daily driver) from a pure performance standpoint. Body/aero improvements are one legit area. I’ve been considering getting the K&N intake kit, mostly for vocal improvement, but I wouldn’t refuse the extra ~9hp.

My voice says things like, “Those rear struts are clunking pretty badly you should replace them before they fail.” and “Boy those brakes are squealing louder and louder you should replace the pads and discs.”

I know the voice, and know it well. It happens with every vehicle I’ve owned.
Thankfully, with one of my rides, the mod voice takes me away from reasonable power usage (with diesel, when you build for power, you take away from towing usability per the many, many forum posts I’ve read). With the other one, though, I’ve considered yanking the 805cc V-twin from my M50 and replacing it with another engine, which then leads to a new swingarm setup, also leads to different forks, etc (The forks would be Hayabusa, likely the same for the rear swingarm). I can get another motorcycle, but it won’t be a Frankencycle (tm) .
I know that voice all too well.
